I have experienced some intense pop-up books in my day, but nothing like this one! Most pop-up books are just 3D comics, but this one is an actual product. Named This Book Is A Camera by Kelli Anderson pops open and functions completely as a pinhole camera!
Since everyone has a camera literally in their pockets on their phones nowadays, Kelli wanted to design this pop-up book to show them the working principle behind the pinhole camera and how it works. Technology has always made things more complex, but most people don’t bother to learn how things work, all they know is their cell phone takes awesome images… not being knowledgable about optical image stabilization or depth sensing. If you open this book, it automatically forms the shape of a camera. All the user has to do is lock the tabs and place the shutter in its appropriate place. This is the DIY part, you just insert the photo paper, aim, lifting the shutter for a couple seconds, return it and ta da, you have just taking an image with a pin-hole camera! This book also gives background on the analog style of developing photos. One you have taken the image, it does have to be processed in a dark room, leaving you with a mega retro, black and white photo that will need color inverting. Not necessarily matching the quality our cell phones cameras now have, you get an old school feel to it, and honestly I love that!
This book would be a perfect gift for a shutterbug you know that loves cameras maybe to teach them about the history of how this kind of camera works, or perhaps you have a child… they would absolutely love This Book Is A Camera, it could even be a parent and child activity!
